Compensation: $17.36 - $21.05 per hour

Departmental Mission:

As a key component for faculty and student success within the College's Academic Services division, Learning Resources dynamically integrates library and tutoring services into one centralized department that supports the mission of developing and sustaining innovation in research, learning, and technology; fostering and supporting intellectual curiosity, academic independence, and student achievement; and establishing and nurturing strong partnerships and connections with students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Position Expectations:

Working within the welcoming and well-appointed Clearwater Campus library and learning center, the full-time Instructional Support Specialist provides out-of-class support to students through individual appointments and small group instruction, both in person and online. The specialist will support students with writing assignments for a wide variety of classes across the curriculum. A variety of tutoring styles are encouraged to meet the needs of the students.

As part of a team of professionals, the successful candidate for this position should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in providing clear explanation and instruction of basic and advanced writing concepts and of the writing and communication process in various formats;

  • Patiently explain concepts, using varied instructional methods, to empower the student to find solutions, so the student feels confident to work independently;

  • Show ability to work successfully with students from diverse educational, cultural, age, and social backgrounds, and of varying abilities, to foster an environment of student belonging;

  • Exemplify the attitude, desire, and skills to build strong partnerships with faculty, the writing and communications team, and the college-wide Learning Resources department;

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to integrate writing support into the curriculum and improve student writing outcomes;

  • Participate in department meetings, committees, and other initiatives related to writing support and literacy;

  • Switch between subject and topic areas throughout the day and to manage multiple initiatives within a changing, fast-paced environment;

  • Focus on student-first customer service in an open, busy, collaborative, learning facility;

  • Practice self-reflective teaching and learning and continue to learn new systems, processes, and pedagogy at SPC while working in this position, including completion of our CRLA Level 1 Certification;

  • Stay informed about current trends and research in writing pedagogy and incorporate innovative practices into support programs.

Candidates must be able to work the bulk of their scheduled hours during the busiest time of the day (8:30 AM-5:30 PM) and at least one regularly scheduled evening (until 8 PM) per week. Preferred qualifications include applicants that have an advanced degree in a relevant field, and/or classroom experience. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Position Summary:

This class is the first of four levels in the Instructional Support series. Incumbents provide tutoring and coaching services to students in a variety of academic areas. Responsibilities include working with individual students and with small groups of students in classes and in private; working with students who are intellectually disabled and their disability accommodations; monitoring and scheduling students; oversight of all assignments; compiling and delivering instructional materials and course content; facilitating and coordinating with faculty; and maintaining records of student progress. A qualified applicant will complete a cover letter, a resume, and an application.

Requirements:

Education

Associate's degree preferred.

Experience

Two years related experience.

* An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be acceptable in lieu of those requirements listed above.

Knowledge

  • Recordkeeping principles.
  • Computers and related software applications.

Skills

  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills (both manual and electronic)
  • PC Computer skills
  • Basic Skill Level in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat, and OneDrive
  • Intermediate Zoom skills.
  • Ability to effectively work with intellectually disabled students to explain materials and complete assignments through coaching in individual and group settings.
  • Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds in group settings.
  • Maintaining an appropriate learning environment in class and in coaching sessions.
  • Maintaining student records.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisors, faculty members, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Physical

  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Tutors students in small groups or one-on-one formats, which involves: assessing student needs in order to facilitate and maximize tutoring sessions; proofreading written work prepared by students; obtaining and utilizing appropriate course materials, such as the course syllabus; and performing related duties.
