This role is part of the Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance team. This team is focused on monitoring and assessing processes that guide Blue Origin's design, manufacturing, and operations, ensuring system safety engineering, environmental health, and safety, product integrity, and continuous improvement processes.

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will provide Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) support for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of EHS implementation and compliance programs including but not limited to: OSHA General Industry and Construction standards, hazardous materials, cryogenics, compressed gases, confined space, lasers, robotics, fall protection, PPE, hazard communication, crane safety, lockout/tagout, and radiation safety. You must have a passion for continuous improvement of a safety culture, building agile safety processes, and for solving complex problems and providing operable solutions and be capable of acting with minimal direction on your initiative. You will be responsible for helping to maintain a culture that emphasizes accountability, discipline, and attention to detail at all levels.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain compliance with the Blue Origin Environmental Health and Safety Manual and all applicable regulations and/or guidelines established by OSHA, NFPA and NIOSH and other applicable government regulatory agencies.
  • Provide review and support of current policies and plans as required.
  • Interpret new regulations, determine their applicability to organization procedures and standards, and devise strategies and procedures for compliance.
  • Collaborate directly with department to complete required hazard analyses / assessments and implement environmental, health and safety policies and procedures
  • Drive EHS compliance and continuous improvements that result in promoting and maintaining a proactive safety culture
  • Advise management and supervisors on effective methods to resolve EHS hazards/concerns within cost and schedule constraints following a safety order of precedence to include elimination, substitution, engineering controls, work practice controls, training, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure that safety of personnel, property, and the environment are within acceptable risk boundaries.
  • Anticipate and recognize hazards, evaluate exposures, and offer control methods to protect employees from risks.
  • Lead or assist in all aspects of incident reporting including initial follow-up, investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Perform audits as applicable and participate in pre and post meetings, review of findings and opportunities for improvement, implement approved corrective actions, follow-up for effectiveness after completion.
  • Deliver virtual presentations or instruction-led to management and employees on EHS initiatives, metrics/measurements, and implementation plans.
  • Serve as an advocate for the continuous improvement of comprehensive EHS processes, procedures, and programs; effectively communicate challenges, successes, and areas of concern with management when potential hazards and risks are identified.
  • Create, update, and coordinate emergency response plans with state and local emergency planning committees as required. Interfacing with state and federal regulatory agencies and preparing reports as required.
  • Inspect launch complex, satellite facilities, and safety equipment
  • Provide EHS support to launch complex facilities
  • Provide oversight and support of PSM activities for all hazardous commodities
  • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by the EPA, CERCLA, RCRA, DOT, and FDEP other applicable regulatory agencies
  • Review and interpret new and proposed environmental laws and regulations, and provide guidance to management
  • Perform environmental compliance and due diligence audits to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies
  • Conduct and monitor the NPDES and other discharge permits/plans
  • Maintain recordkeeping and compliance requirements established for permitted sources
  • Responsible for hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including DOT and RCRA

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, and/ or bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited school
  • 6-8 years of proven industry specific EHS experience
  • Strong communication, engagement, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong OSHA and other safety related training and delivery
  • Environmental permitting experience
  • Proficient digital literacy is preferred, specifically with Microsoft products including SharePoint, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws/environmental, health and safety regulatory compliance
  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management methods, pressure systems, and chemical delivery systems
  • Knowledge of close call reporting practices and processes
  • Good analytical skills and attention to details, technical writing, with an ability to interpret and communicate complex technical information
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Must be able to pass a background check in order to obtain a Defense Biometric Identification Card

Desired:

  • Proven industry specific EHS experience in aerospace operations, chemical/delivery systems, or space and or missile systems, ground systems or similar; relevant certifications will be considered to support years of experience required
  • Knowledge of Space Force 91-710 Range Safety Requirements
  • Expertise in Fire/Life Safety Code (NFPA, IBC, IFC)
  • Strong working knowledge of commercial space and DoD safety standards
  • Process Safety Management
  • ASP, CSP, CIH, or CHMM certification
  • DOD or NASA Launch Operations and Recovery Experience
  • HAZMAT, cryogenic, and/or Liquid Propellant emergency response team experience
  • Six Sigma Green belt or Black belt
  • Experience in both environmental and safety fields
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining compliance with storm water regulations
  • Strong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience with emergency response communication and incident management in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water
  • Strong working knowledge of Environment, Safety & Occupational Health
