Job Description

RK&K is currently hiring a Roadway Inspector to join our CEI team in Lakeland, FL. This position is in our Construction Management group which oversees contractors on roadway construction and site development projects for Polk County, FL.

Essential Functions

  • Assisting the Polk County Lead Construction & Testing Inspector in daily inspection activities
  • Performs utility (water; wastewater; reclaimed water), roadway, pavement, culvert, drainage system, and related site development construction inspections to ensure compliance with the approved construction plans, specifications, and related permits
  • Inspection of installation of underground utility lines
  • Backfill and compaction, soil density testing
  • Inspection of storm sewer and surface water management facilities
  • Site grading, soil stabilization/erosion prevention
  • Proper pavement construction including depths, materials, installation, mix and temperature testing for asphalt pavements
  • Verifies material quantities and product types
  • Inspection of lift station, water plan, and wastewater plant construction
  • Installation of signage and traffic control devices
  • Makes record of project progress
  • Interacts with contractors, consultants, and other related parties.
  • Identifies project issues and coordinates with Supervisor regarding resolutions.
  • Checks and verifies contractor's pay requests, as applicable
  • Makes recommendations to Supervisor regarding final release of projects at completion of construction

Required Education, Skills and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent plus four (4) years of experience in roadway/highway, water/wastewater or site development project construction or inspection experience
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a Florida driver's license at the time of employment
  • Familiarity with the FDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, the Polk County Land Development Code, the Polk County Utilities Code, Maintenance of Traffic, and safety in work zones
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, and instruments used in testing of materials and utility systems
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, consultants, engineers, developers, contractors, agency officials, and the public. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, both manually and using computing devices
  • Ability to make construction estimates, read and interpret civil engineering plans, specifications, maps, and surveys
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work of assigned personnel
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, sit, stand, crouch, and kneel
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, materials and/or equipment that may weigh up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Ability to operate motorized vehicles for long periods of time
  • Ability to distinguish colors and shapes
  • Must have the following as required by the scope of work for the project:
    • Qualifications
      • CTQP Concrete Field Inspector Level I
      • CTQP Asphalt Roadway Level I and Level II
      • CTQP Earthwork Construction Inspection Level I and Level II
      • CTQP Drilled Shaft
      • CTQP Final Estimates I
      • FDOT Intermediate MOT
      • Must obtain FDOT Certification for Plans Reading and Sediment and Erosion Control "Qualified Stormwater Inspector" within 6 months from beginning of employment

Preferred Education Skills and Experience

  • Back Flow Prevention Assembly Testing
  • Competence on OSHA Safety -OSHA
  • FDOT Critical Structures Construction Issues certification
  • Sewer Collection, Certification A, B OR C - American Water Works Association
  • (A.W.W.A.)/Florida Pollution Control Association 9FCOA)
  • Contract Maintenance Inspection - FDOT
  • Signs and Markings, Level I - FDOT/International Municipal Signal Association
  • (IMSA)*
  • Utility Relocation, Clearing and Grubbing - FDOT
